Whale Watching from Bentota: Three Day Trips to Mirissa, and the Ten Hours Around the Boat
Updated October 7, 2026 · 7 min read
The first thing to know about whale watching from Bentota is that there is none. The boats leave from Mirissa harbour, a long drive down the coast, and every “whale tour from Bentota” is a Mirissa trip with a hotel pickup and a very early start. That can still be the right way to do it — but the car is most of the day.
The short answer. If whales are the point: the whale watching cruise with hotel transfers at €153.72, 3.6 stars over 4 reviews — the only one of the three built around the boat, with about four hours on the water and a packed breakfast. If you want a full day around it: the Bentota whale watching, Galle Fort and turtle day tour at €95.75, which has no reviews yet. Cheapest: the Bentota to Mirissa whale watching and southern coast day tour at €48.31, 3.1 stars over 2 reviews.

Three whale days compared
| Tour | Duration | From | Rating | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Whale Watching Tour with Transfers | 10 hours | €153.72 | 3.6 (4) | Whale-first travellers: a long boat time and breakfast aboard |
| Bentota: Whale Watching, Galle Fort, & Turtle Day Tour | 10 hours | €95.75 | no reviews yet | Travellers who want Galle Fort and a hatchery in the same day |
| Bentota to Mirissa Whale Watching & Southern Coast Day Tour | 1 day | €48.31 | 3.1 (2) | The lowest headline price; the operator lists it as wheelchair accessible, so confirm that first |
Where the ten hours go
The €153.72 trip’s own itinerary counts 2.75 hours in the car each way to Mirissa, and four hours at the harbour and on the boat, which departs around 7 a.m. and runs three to five hours. On the page’s own numbers, a 7 a.m. departure minus a 2.75-hour drive means a pickup at around 4 a.m. Treat the drive as the cost of the trip, not as scenery: you will spend roughly five and a half hours in a vehicle for about four on the sea.
The other two stack more stops on top. The €95.75 day adds Galle Fort, a turtle hatchery and an optional moonstone mine after the boat; the €48.31 day adds Mirissa beach, Galle Fort, a beach stop at Hikkaduwa, the stilt fishermen and an optional Madu river safari. More stops make a longer day, not a better whale morning.
Check the boat ticket before the price
The €153.72 page lists whale-watching boat charges and wildlife fees in the price. The €95.75 page lists whale-watching tickets in the price, and says lunch and the hatchery entry are not. The €48.31 page is unclear: its includes list runs on into the excluded items, and “Whales Watching Tickets” sits at the end of the list. Ask the operator whether the boat ticket is covered before you book; if it is not, the cheapest price is not the cheapest tour.
When and how
One booking page for a similar trip gives the ideal Mirissa whale season as November to April, when the sea is calmer and sightings are more frequent. None of the three pages we read promises a sighting. Ask what the operator does if the boat does not see a whale. Do not book a whale day as the only fixed point of a short holiday.
Seasickness. The €95.75 page lists people prone to seasickness as not suited. You will be 20 to 40 kilometres offshore, by that page’s description, so if anyone in your party gets sick on boats, speak to a pharmacist before you fly, not in the harbour at 7 a.m.
Children. None of the pages states a minimum age we can quote, and a pre-dawn start plus a long drive plus hours on open sea is a lot for a small child. Our guide to Bentota with children describes shorter alternatives on calm water.
The honest alternative
Sleep in Mirissa the night before and book a boat from there. That saves the five and a half hours in the car and the 4 a.m. pickup, and it costs a night in a hotel instead of a day of your holiday. It is the version we would choose if whales were the main reason for a trip to the coast. We have not compared Mirissa-based boats here because they do not leave from Bentota, but they are the obvious alternative to this page.
The honest recommendation
If you are staying in Bentota for the week and want one whale day, book the €153.72 trip: its itinerary is built around the boat and the price is clear about what is included. If you also want Galle Fort the same day, the €95.75 tour is the sensible compromise, with the caveat that it has no reviews yet. We would not book the €48.31 tour until the operator has confirmed the boat ticket is in the price.
Where to look
